Introduction to Functional Safety Seminars

If you are interested in functional safety, and I know many readers are based on the statistics I see for my other functional safety-related posts, I think you will be interested in this. I am collaborating with the IEEE Product Safety Engineering Society’s Virtual Chapter to provide a series of three 35 minute seminars discussing the fundamentals of functional safety. The series started last month and continues this month on Thursday, 2019-04-18 at 12:00 EDT (UTC -4). You must be a member of the IEEE PSES to attend. You can contact the PSES Virtual Chapter to get more information on how to join. Attendance to Virtual Chapter Meetings and the seminars is free for members.

Seminar Topics

Session 1

Session 1 was given on 2019-03-21 and generated record attendance at a PSES VC Meeting. Thanks to everyone who attended that session! During the seminar, I discussed:

• What functional safety is, and why it matters

Session 2

In Session 2, coming on Thursday, 2019-04-18 at noon EDT (UTC -4), I will be discussing:

• Key concepts used in ISO 13849, including
  • Figure 5 from the 2015 (3^rd) edition
  • Architecture (Categories B, 1, 2, 3, 4)
  • Well-tried safety principles
  • Well-tried components

Session 3

In Session 3, coming on 2019-07-18 at noon EDT (UTC -4), I will be discussing

• Short review of Sessions 1 & 2
• Key concepts used in ISO 13849, including
  • Mean Time to Dangerous Failure (MTTF_D)
  • Diagnostic Coverage (DC_avg)
  • Common Cause Failures (CCF)
  • Verification and Validation
  • Safety-Related Software Development
• Recommended Further Reading
