Machinery Safety 101

Introduction to Functional Safety Seminars

If you are interested in functional safety, and I know many readers are based on the statistics I see for my other functional safety-related posts, I think you will be interested in this. I am collaborating with the IEEE Product Safety Engineering Society’s Virtual Chapter to provide a series of three 35 minute seminars discussing the fundamentals of functional safety. The series started last month and continues this month on Thursday, 2019-04-18 at 12:00 EDT (UTC ‑4). You must be a member of the IEEE PSES to attend. You can contact the PSES Virtual Chapter to get more information on how to join. Attendance to Virtual Chapter Meetings and the seminars is free for members.

Seminar Topics

The first functional safety session recording is available to IEEE PSES members now, so you can still catch up before the next seminar. Grab the syllabus here:

Summary

Topics include:

  • What functional safety is, and why it matters
  • Current functional safety sector standards
  • The functional safety life cycle
  • The linkage between risk assessment and functional safety
  • Key concepts used in ISO 13849, including:
    • Safety Requirement Specification (SRS)
    • Performance Level (PL)
    • Architecture (Categories B, 1, 2, 3, 4)
    • Mean Time to Dangerous Failure (MTTFD)
    • Diagnostic Coverage (DCavg)
    • Common Cause Failures (CCF)
    • Verification and Validation
    • Safety-Related Software Development

Session 1

Session 1 was given on 2019-03-21 and generated record attendance at a PSES VC Meeting. Thanks to everyone who attended that session! During the seminar I discussed:

  • Current functional safety sector standards
  • The functional safety life cycle
  • The linkage between risk assessment and functional safety
    • Safety Requirement Specification
  • Performance Levels

Session 2

In Session 2, coming on Thursday, 2019-04-18 at 12:00 EDT (UTC ‑4), I will be discussing:
